Did you know that koala's are listed as a "vulnerable" species?
Recently there has been lots of media about koalas and the population decline. Experts are saying that at the rate they are being killed and are dying plus the devastating bush fires in 2019/2020- they will be EXTINCT in the wild in NSW & QLD by 2050! EXTINCT! Not to mention that koalas populations in Victoria are also suffering due to habitat loss, car strikes and a relatively new/unknown disease killing them in many areas around the state- Sarcoptic Mange (scabies). This disease is a death sentence for koalas because for wild koalas, once they are discovered with signs of it, its too late. It has been treated in some koalas when caught very early but this has only been successful in a VERY small percentage. The majority of koalas that contract this, are euthanised.
Over the years, Libby's passion has developed to a love for all wildlife! Every carer or rescuer that she meets, opens up her heart and mind to other animals and the ways they can be helped. She now spends her time helping many shelters, carers and rescuers of ALL wildlife- not just koalas. Funds raised supports these volunteers in the work that they do saving and protecting our wildlife. Money raised helps many species- Koalas, kangaroos, wombats, eagles, possums, flying foxes, sugar gliders, echidnas, reptiles, all kinds of birds & parrots- all Australian Native animals.

Water stations for wildlife
In summer 2019 and 2020, I have been volunteering at a wildlife shelter on the Victorian/New South Wales border. We have been putting out water stations for wildlife. Its a busy camping area and many camp right on the river- wildlife are too afraid to come to the river to drink (because of people, dogs and other threats) so we provide them an alternative.

Today when Kylee and I were driving down to the river for a cool off we spotted a few koalas low in the trees and we stopped to give them some water.
This girl was so hot that she was sitting at the base of the tree and she was very dehydrated. We also thought that she did have a small Joey in her pouch.
fun fact..... when any marsupial has a Joey in their pouch, it increase their body temperature by an extra 5 degrees.
There was also a male koala sitting again low in the same tree as her. We pulled out a ice cream container and used 4 bottles of water to fill this up, we then placed a stick and some rocks in it so that other animals could also use it. This just shows that the wildlife does depend on us to help them, they need the water more then ever as it is beginning to get really hot. It also shows the right way to offer water- in a bowl/bucket/tub/hole in the ground , so that they can lap from it. Please do not offer them water from a bottle (even if they want it). This can kill them as the water can easily get into their lungs. You can even pour it on a tree trunk, stick or leaves and they will lick it. Then make a well in the ground and pour what’s left into it.
So this is just another reminder to put out some water for the wildlife because they do use it and they do appreciate it. Even in the suburbs and especially if you’re camping along a river.

More water put out for wildlife today. This is a male koala we’ve name Adam after Adam Sandler because during the January heat he would always be waiting for us to top up his water bowl. When we were driving I said to Kylee “oh how funny would it be if all of a sudden we saw Adam?” and then we did!! We hadn’t seen him in that same tree or the near by trees throughout all of winter. So he had obviously remembered that we’d come and he depended on that water. When we arrived he was laying at the base of the tree and once we put the water in he started drinking heaps of it. Remember- if you are camping along a river, that river is normally a water source for wildlife. With campers there, the wildlife won’t always feel safe going to the water so I hope that campers will give them another water source while you are all in our wildlife’s home. Please Pack some ice cream containers in your campers, leave them away from your camp and check them daily.
Special News Piece- FIRST KOALA RESCUE
In January Libby has spent almost 2 weeks volunteering at Dutch Thunder Wildlife Shelter in Koonoomoo (Northern Victoria). See her very first Koala rescue- the video is nothing short of amazing! Libby and her mentor save this koala from dying the the river- seamless. Unfortunately the koala passed but did not suffer and die in the river.
