Koala Clancy Tour- You Yangs VIC

Today mum and I went to the You Yangs just outside of Melbourne. We went to do a koala conservation tour with the Koala Clancy Foundation & Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours.
We went to remove a weed called boneseed weed because koalas don't like it. It was easy to take out. There were small ones and some were as big as me but they were easy to pull out. After we went out for a walk to find wild koalas. the first koala we found was called Pat and she was Clancy's mother. Pat was sitting up high in a tree and then we drove up to a car park and then we walked really far to Clancy. When we saw Clancy he was looking at use when we took photos and then just before we were about to leave he crossed his arms. When we were coming back someone found Anzac who is Clancy's father but we didn't get to see him. There were thousands of mozzies too. I got lots of bites but it was worth it to help koalas.

Some of the things I learned were...
  • Koala poo smells like eucalyptus.
  • Koalas move trees every day
  • Koalas have a different pattern on their nostril that identifies them
  • Inside koalas poo it is green
  • Because of global warming trees are dying. We need to plant more trees in the southern plains and along our rivers to encourage animals to water sources to healthy trees. Trees are dying.
Boneseed Weed Removal
Taken from the Koala Clancy Website:
"Our Koala Research in the You Yangs started in 2006 and we quickly realised that koalas are rarely seen in areas thickly infested with the weed. Boneseed may deprive the eucalyptus trees of water or nutrients, it may make ground travel difficult for the koalas, or it may simply upset the delicate natural balance of the ecosystem. It is clear that areas of koala habitat are being lost to the weed."

Thank you Janine, Kirby and Mel for sharing your stories and passions for koalas with me.
